- The Dachshund [dachs=badgers; hund=dog] was originally developed more than 300 years ago in Germany to hunt badger and are accomplished hunting dogs despite their lapdog reputations.
- Just before WWII, Dachshunds were ranked sixth among American registrations, and maintained this impressive rank through the war by hands-on public relations. At one point, to avoid anti-German sentiment the Dachshund's name was temporarily translated to "badger dog."
- Dachshunds are bred with three coat varieties: Smooth, Wire-Haired, Long-Haired and are available in two sizes: Standard & Miniature, the most popular of which is the Smooth Miniature. If your dachshund was supposed to be a mini but grew out of it, it is affectionately known as a "Tweenie"
- Standard sized Dachshunds are reputed to have tracked a wounded wild boar for up to three days. mmmm...Have you ever seen a Wild Boar? Most dachshunds couldn't go 5 hours without saying "forget this, I'm hungry and I missed my nap"
